What's stopping you from doing good work?

A few ideas to jumpstart your next slump

Imagine you have a huge project ahead of you and you're overwhelmed by the process. After all, it's so much damn work. Decision paralysis gets the best of us all.

What should you do? While not every solution works for everyone 100% of the time, here's a few ideas to try:

  • Discovery: Sometimes what's blocking execution is a lack of ideas. Infuse your process by surrounding yourself with good, relevant work, even if it's in an unrelated industry. For me, I like to follow a few specific designers/developers and browse Awwwards and Webby entries.
  • Iterate: I'm guilty of this too: you want to execute one idea and one idea only. Most of us know, however, our best ideas are often our second, third, or even fourth iteration. This comes more naturally by your discovery process.
  • Minimize: Instead of designing/building an entire page, design one section. Focus on something small to move forward. Implement branding and detail iteratively. Even better, write out your plan as a proposal (to your team, or even just yourself!).

There are lots of ways to find creativity and make progress. What do you do when you're feeling stuck? I'd love to know!
